GBD Innovation Club is pleased to announce the membership of the Waterfront Business Improvement Area (BIA), the managing organization representing businesses located along Toronto’s revitalized central waterfront.

With a total area of 1.5 km², 603,800 square meters of office space, 1,400 companies, and 25,000 employees, Toronto’s waterfront is one of the most dynamic and recognizable urban business environments in North America. Over the past decades, the area has undergone a remarkable transformation—from a largely industrial zone to a mixed-use district that integrates office development, residential communities, tourism, and cultural landmarks.

The Waterfront BIA plays a vital role in this evolution. It supports the economic and social vitality of the waterfront through placemaking, branding, sustainable urban development, and public-private collaboration. These priorities closely align with the mission and values of the GBD Innovation Club.

Toronto’s waterfront continues to expand southward from the city’s financial core, encompassing new office towers, major public spaces like Sugar Beach and Love Park, and vibrant cultural sites including Harbourfront Centre and the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery. More than 30,000 residents live along Queens Quay, the district’s iconic four-kilometre promenade, with substantial growth still to come. The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, located on the waterfront, is accessible via tunnel or a short ferry crossing—further enhancing connectivity.

Waterfront revitalization is also being accelerated through a major redevelopment of the Port Lands led by Waterfront Toronto, with 150,000 additional residents expected in the years ahead. Projects such as The Bentway Conservancy are improving underpass areas and fostering stronger connections between the city and its waterfront.

The Waterfront BIA supports the development of a waterfront that is well-connected to the city, vibrant throughout the year, and unified in its identity. The organization runs a wide range of initiatives—from street cleaning and public realm enhancements to local business promotion and neighbourhood events. Its recent work includes the Waterfront Retail Review, which outlines strategies to enhance the commercial experience along the water’s edge, and the Ripple Effect report, produced with The Business of Cities and the Toronto Region Board of Trade, which highlights the waterfront’s potential as a competitive urban advantage.

The BIA is led by Executive Director Tim Kocur, who has expressed strong interest in engaging with the Club’s international network.

We are delighted to welcome Waterfront BIA to the GBD Innovation Club and look forward to meaningful exchanges and collaboration in the months and years ahead.
