GBD Innovation Club kicked off its new international roadshow series in Bangkok. Co-organized with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Beijing CBD Administration Committee, the three-day program fostered dialogue between local and international experts

At the end of June 2025, as part of its newly launched international roadshow series, GBD Innovation Club launched its first international program in the heart of Bangkok. Co-organized with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Beijing CBD Adimistration Committee, the three-day initiative brought together local and international leaders, urban experts, and private sector actors to explore Pathum Wan District, one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic and fast-transforming urban core.

Bangkok’s Pathum Wan: A Rising Star of Southeast Asia

Pathum Wan District, the central core of Bangkok, is quickly emerging as a model for integrated urban development in the region. With landmarks such as Siam Paragon, CentralWorld, and Chulalongkorn University, it is not only a commercial and cultural hub but also a testing ground for smart city governance and urban regeneration. Ongoing redevelopment initiatives are reshaping the district into a next-generation global business district, aiming to combine innovation, sustainability, and quality of life.

Situated at the intersection of regional trade flows and digital innovation, Pathum Wan plays a strategic role as a connector between the Indochina Peninsula and broader Asian economic zones. Its urban transition presents valuable insights into how emerging city cores can be redefined to meet global standards of competitiveness and livability.

Objectives of the Program

The Bangkok visit marked a key step in strengthening the GBD Innovation Club’s international exchange program. The primary objectives of the trip were:

  • To deepen understanding of how emerging urban centers like Pathum Wan are integrating innovation and governance.
  • To share best practices on sustainable and inclusive business district development.
  • To explore real-world applications of smart city technologies.
  • To build long-term partnerships between thailand and global stakeholders.
  • To launch a new cycle of field-based exchanges and learning missions within GBD Innovation Club.

Representatives of the GBD Innovation Club included:

Day 2: On-Site Visits

Participants explored Bangkok’s leading innovation and business hubs. The visit to True Digital Park sparked a fruitful conversation with its team, led by Mr. Tarit Nimmanwudipong. As one of Southeast Asia’s largest startup campuses, True Digital Park integrates workspace, innovation labs, academic research, and lifestyle amenities to create a thriving ecosystem for entrepreneurs, tech companies, and investors. It serves as a national model for fostering digital transformation and positioning Thailand as a regional leader in the digital economy.

Participants were then invited to the headquarters of CP Group, one of Thailand’s largest and most influential conglomerates, with operations spanning agribusiness, retail, telecommunications, and real estate. There, a presentation was delivered by Mr. Weiwei Huang, Senior Vice President of China Strategic Development and Cooperation. The session concluded with an inspiring exchange with Mr. Boonchai Opas-Likit, Chairman for US, EU, and UK Business at CP Group.

Day 3: Institutional Visits

The final day of the program featured a visit to the Chulalongkorn University Property Management Office, where participants learned about the university’s strategic role in managing land assets, shaping urban development, and supporting innovation within the Pathum Wan District. As Thailand’s oldest and one of its most prestigious universities, Chulalongkorn has played a major role in urban regeneration efforts, bridging academia and city planning. The property management office oversees significant portions of land within central Bangkok and is actively involved in creating mixed-use development strategies that balance academic, commercial, and public interests.

This was followed by presentation of the Pathum Wan District, offering a closer look at how local governance is adapting to the district’s evolving needs and its ambition to become a global model for integrated, people-centered development.

Together, this exchenge offered first-hand insights into Thailand’s innovation ecosystem, the relationship between academia and urban planning, and corporate strategies driving sustainable district development.

Strategic Collaboration with Global Vision

This initiative reinforces GBD Innovation Club’s mission to foster international cooperation among global business districts and to identify transferable models of innovation, sustainability, and governance. The collaboration between Beijing CBD and Bangkok’s Pathum Wan is emblematic of a growing trans-Asian dialogue focused on shared urban challenges and opportunities.

As the first step in a new cycle of international exchanges, Innovative Bangkok set the tone for future programs. The initiative created a meaningful platform for shared learning and laid the foundation for long-term partnerships between public and private stakeholders across Asia.

This international program will continue in other key urban centers around the world, each time showcasing a different model of urban innovation. Stay tuned for upcoming destinations as GBD Innovation Club continues to connect, inspire, and shape the future of global business districts.
